About PATH
PATH was founded in 1965 by a group of Appalachian Trail enthusiasts based in the Piedmont area of North Carolina - hence the name Piedmont Appalachian Trail Hikers. Our current membership is around 100 people and includes members from as far away as Florida and Washington, and as close as next door to the Appalachian Trail. Our most seasoned member has been a part of PATH since 1965 and our newest member could be reading this right now!
Our members support the club through:
-
dues and monetary donations
-
trail maintenance
-
coordinating logistics for Trail Work Weekends
-
networking with local businesses and organizations
-
administrative tasks
-
contributing to the quarterly newsletter
-
maintaining tools and equipment
-
attending trainings and meetings with other clubs, the ATC, and other land managers
-
serving on the Board of Directors

PATH members are from all walks of life with diverse educational, occupational, and cultural backgrounds. Our membership includes 8-year-olds, 80-year-olds, and all ages in between. On each PATH Trail Work Weekend, you’ll meet families, couples, and individuals, all of whom enjoy the outdoors and want to do something to preserve its beauty for future generations.

PATH’s membership numbers about 100, and about half of those members will attend at least one volunteer weekend or event each year. Even if you’re not able to attend work trips often — or at all — we still welcome you as a member. Your dues payment helps support our work and we are always grateful for your participation.

PATH Archive
If you want to take a trip back in time, have a look at The Burgess Scans. Former PATH Club President Paul Clayton has collected and scanned a trove of photographs taken by the late Gordon Burgess. This collection also includes photos from other PATH members and many historical documents.
